“Sherry White’s feature directorial debut is a delicate balancing act, a sharply observed character study of two women who struggle to do their best despite being handed a pretty rotten lot in life. Greeley is a revelation as Mitsy, turning in a performance so sympathetic it is often heart-wrenching to behold. And as her grandmother, Walsh offers us yet another multi-dimensional character, proving she can deliver much more than the comedy that made her famous. Mitsy’s story is never sentimentalized, and while the times are indeed as harsh as one can imagine, White offers us some cautious optimism as well. Crackie is a refined film, full of evocative moments and raw human emotion.” -  Matthew Hays, Toronto International Film Festival

“Sherry White’s sparkling debut feature tells the poetic, funny and spellbinding tale of three generations of tough and independent women on the margins of small-town Newfoundland. Meghan Greeley plays Mitsy, a hairdresser wannabe whose universe is profoundly changed when her errant mother arrives from Alberta. Her gregarious gran—with whom Mitsy has lived since she was four—is played by none other than Mary Walsh in a precise, restrained performance that forms the emotional heart of a heart-rending story. With Joel Hynes providing a classic slimy small-town lothario and an irresistible dog stealing many of the scenes, Crackie manages to blend elements of Altman’s 3 Women, Ibsen’s A Doll’s House and British kitchen-sink realism into an unforgettable narrative of lives lived and lessons learned.” - Atlantic Film Festival

“Seventeen-year-old Mitsy lives with her grandmother Bride in a ramshackle house in a small Newfoundland town. By day Bride scavenges the dump for junk to sell, by night she services local village men. Mitsy studies hair design at the local college and dreams about leaving to find her mother in Alberta after she finishes school. Her mother has no idea of her plans. Because she feels lonely, Mitsy decides to get a dog, but shop assistant Duffy isn’t about to let it go for free. Bride hopes that her granddaughter’s life will be different from her own, but unfortunately it seems that Mitsy is making the same mistakes as her mother and grandmother. Approaching the authenticity of a Ken Loach film, Crackie is indebted to excellent acting performances. Despite the gloom and desperation of certain situations, the film is full of hope, humanity, and tragicomic moments. Meghan Greeley shines in the role of Mitsy, her film debut. - Ivana Novotna, Programmer Karlovy Vary International Film Festival

Crackie starring Mary Walsh to have North American premiere at Tiff!!

Fresh from its world premiere at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival, where it was described as “approaching the authenticity of a Ken Loach film”, Crackie features an emotional dramatic performance by Mary Walsh, as well as a stunning star turn by newcomer Meghan Greeley. Crackie marks the feature film directorial debut of Sherry White, whose previous short films have premiered at TIFF.
Crackie tells the story of seventeen-year-old MITSY who dreams of ditching her harsh-tongued grandmother, BRIDE (played by Walsh) who’s raised her since she was four, by running off to find the mother who deserted her. But when her mother turns up unexpectedly and wreaks havoc in their lives, Mitsy is forced to decide whether the woman who raised her is her enemy, or her strongest ally.

Crackie screened at the 2009 Cannes market where it was lauded as a “well made and intelligent drama.” Speaking of her experience on the film, Walsh says, “Crackie’s vision somehow feels like the truth to me.”
